See my chapters "Work" and "Homo Faber" for an in depth explanation. The short version is that early peoples lived freely. Everyone has always had to work, but no one ever had to have a job. The entire concept of the job is a modern one. One should be able to live freely and to survive on the fruit of one's own hands. Anthropologists overwhelmingly believe the ancient peoples only "worked" about 3 hours a day, but the work they did was joyful and spontaneous. In the other waking hours there was time for conversation, love, games, storytelling, and marvelling at the tremendous, overpowering beauty of creation. Ancient peoples had no need for religion outside of life, since all of life was suffused with an overwhelming sense of the Sacred.
Now, most people must work exceedingly hard at meaningless jobs, or producing ugly things, and they are completely alienated from other humans, the natural world, the product of their labor, and finally, even from their own selves.

You and Lorenzo are articulating what I have long felt about this country, but more eloquently.
I am curious what you meant by this more specifically? "We should have food, shelter, and necessities without the need for work."
